Lowercase f starts just below the top line with a gentle curve that hooks left at the top, then pulls a straight downstroke through the midline and all the way down to the baseline — f is an ascender letter. A short horizontal crossbar is added through the stick right at the midline after the downstroke is complete. Uppercase F begins at the top line with a straight downstroke to the baseline, then adds a full-width horizontal bar at the top and a shorter horizontal bar at the midline, with no bar at the bottom.
The crossbar on lowercase f must sit precisely at the midline — too high and it looks like a t, too low and the letter loses its shape. Practicing with fish and flower gives repeated crossbar placement reps and helps children develop an eye for midline height.

Frequently asked questions
- How do children confuse lowercase f and lowercase t?
- Both letters have a downstroke and a crossbar at roughly the same height, but f has a curved hook at the top and a taller ascender, while t has a straight top and a shorter stick that typically does not reach the full top line. Pointing out f's curved hook and its height above t helps distinguish them.
- Does the hook at the top of lowercase f curve left or right?
- The hook curves to the left. The stroke begins just below the top line, bends gently left at the peak, then pulls straight down. A hook that curves right produces a malformed letter and should be corrected early.
- Are the letter F worksheets free to print?
- Yes. Creating and previewing letter F worksheets is free, and you can screenshot the preview to print. A Pro plan removes the watermark and unlocks high-quality PDF and PNG export.
