Lowercase g starts just below the midline with a counterclockwise circle — the same circle used in a, d, and o — touching the midline at the top and the baseline at the bottom. Without lifting, push back up to the midline and pull a straight downstroke that extends below the baseline into the descender zone, then curve that tail to the left to finish the hook. Uppercase G begins like a large uppercase C — sweeping from just below the top line around to the left and down to the baseline — then adds a short horizontal shelf pointing inward at the midline.
The descending tail of g dips below the baseline, so using the four-line guide is especially helpful here — the descender line shows exactly how far down the tail should drop. Practicing with goat and grapes reinforces both the circle and the tail in the same session.

Frequently asked questions
- How far below the baseline should the tail of lowercase g extend?
- In standard manuscript the tail descends to the descender line, roughly the same distance below the baseline as the midline is above it. The tail should not loop back up; it ends with a leftward or downward curve depending on the handwriting program used.
- How is lowercase g different from lowercase q?
- Both letters combine a circle with a descender, but g's circle is completed before the tail drops, and the tail curves left. In q the circle forms first and then a straight stick descends straight down and may curve right. The direction of the tail and the shape of the circle entry are the clearest distinguishing cues.
