Lowercase h begins at the top line with a tall straight downstroke to the baseline — the ascender. Without lifting, push back up along the stick to just below the midline, then curve forward and right over the midline hump, and pull a second downstroke to the baseline. Uppercase H uses two full-height downstrokes from the top line to the baseline, connected by a horizontal crossbar centered exactly at the midline.
The hump on lowercase h rises just above the midline, and keeping it at the right height prevents the letter from looking like n. Tracing hat and horse on a lined worksheet gives clear visual feedback — if the hump tops out at the midline rather than just above it, the letter needs adjustment.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I help a child tell lowercase h and lowercase n apart?
- The key difference is height: h has a tall stick that starts at the top line, giving it a visible ascender, while n starts and ends at the midline with no tall stroke. Side by side on a four-line guide, h is clearly taller. If both letters are the same height, the h needs correcting.
- Should the hump of lowercase h start at or above the midline?
- The curve begins just below the midline as it branches off the main stick, peaks slightly above the midline at the arch, and then the second downstroke returns to the baseline. The arch should sit close to but not above the midline in most manuscript styles.
- Are the letter H worksheets free to print?
