Lowercase j starts at the midline and pulls a straight downstroke through the baseline and into the descender zone, then curves left into a hook below the baseline. After completing the stroke, lift and add a dot directly above the top of the stick, just above the midline — j is one of only two lowercase letters that has both a descender and a dot. Uppercase J begins at the top line with a straight downstroke that extends into the descender zone and hooks left, and may include a short horizontal serif at the top depending on the manuscript style.

The combination of dot-above and hook-below makes j unique and gives children two placement checkpoints to verify: the dot must float above the midline and the hook must dip below the baseline. Practicing with jar and jellyfish highlights both features in every repetition.

Frequently asked questions

Which direction does the hook at the bottom of lowercase j curve?
The hook curves to the left in standard manuscript. It is a smooth, short curve that ends pointing leftward below the baseline. A hook that curves to the right produces a reversed j, which is a common early error worth addressing at the start.
How is lowercase j different from lowercase i?
Both letters share the same stick-and-dot structure above the baseline, but j's stick continues below the baseline into a curved descender while i ends cleanly at the baseline. The descender and the hook are the defining features that separate j from i.
