The lowercase u sits entirely between the midline and the baseline. Start at the midline, pull a curved stroke down to the baseline, round the bottom, and push back up to the midline on the right side, then pull a short downstroke straight to the baseline to finish. Uppercase U starts at the top line, pulls down and curves at the bottom, then rises back up to the top line before ending with a short downstroke to the baseline, mirroring the lowercase shape at full height.
Because u and n are near-mirror images, tracing the word umbrella side by side with a word like nest helps children notice that u curves down-then-up while n humps up-then-down. Set the trace opacity high so the curve direction is unmistakable in every row before switching to free practice lines.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I help a child stop confusing lowercase u and n?
- Point out that u is like a bucket — it opens at the top to catch rain — while n is like an arch that you walk under. Kinesthetic cues like scooping (for u) and tapping a pretend tunnel ceiling (for n) give children a body-based hook alongside the written drills.
- Does lowercase u have a finishing stroke or does it just stop?
- In standard Zaner-Bloser manuscript, lowercase u ends with a short downstroke on the right side that brings the pencil back to the baseline, ready to connect to the next letter. Skipping that final downstroke is a common shortcut that can cause spacing problems in longer words.
- Are the letter U worksheets free to print?
- Yes. Creating and previewing letter U worksheets is free, and you can screenshot the preview to print. A Pro plan removes the watermark and unlocks high-quality PDF and PNG export.
