About this worksheet
A 4×4 sudoku has four rows, four columns, and four boxes of four cells, and each must hold the digits 1, 2, 3, and 4 once. With only four digits to track, young children can see the whole rule at a glance, which makes these the natural first puzzles before 6×6 and 9×9 grids.
A good first habit is to look for a row, column, or box with three digits already filled and ask which number is missing. Every puzzle on this sheet can be finished that way, one cell at a time.

One solution, every time
Each puzzle is checked to have exactly one solution, so it can always be finished by reasoning, never by guessing.
- 02
Solutions included
The sheet ends with a solutions page, with the filled-in digits in red so they stand out from the clues.

Questions
- What age are 4×4 sudoku puzzles for?
- Children who can recognize the digits 1 to 4 can usually start, often around age 5. Older children who are new to sudoku also find them a quick way to learn the rules.
- How do I explain the rules to a child?
- Each row, each column, and each thick-bordered box needs 1, 2, 3, and 4, with no number twice. Start with a row that is missing just one number and ask which one is not there yet.
- Are these 4×4 sudoku puzzles for kids free?
- Yes. The sample sheet on this page, with its solutions, is a free PDF in US Letter or A4, no account needed. Dealing and previewing new puzzles is free too; printing and downloading custom sheets come with Pro, which also removes the preview watermark.
