About this worksheet

Before formal letter lessons, preschoolers practice the strokes letters are made of: vertical and horizontal lines, circles, crosses, and diagonals. Capitals drawn only with straight lines, such as L, T, E, F, H, and I, put those strokes to work in real letters, which is why many early handwriting programs teach them before curved letters. Every one of them starts at the top line, a habit worth building from the very first sheet.

This sheet enlarges the letters and pairs each faded tracing row with blank practice rows. Keep sessions to a few minutes, offer a short, chunky pencil or crayon, and swap in the letters of your child’s name once these feel easy. In the editor you can raise the letter size further, lighten the trace, and add more practice rows before you print.

  1. 01

    Straight lines first

L, T, E, F, H, and I use only the lines preschoolers already draw, so early success comes quickly.

  2. 02

    Large letters, roomy guides

An enlarged letter size gives small hands space to stay between the lines.

  3. 03

    Their name comes next

Replace the letters with the ones in your child’s name; it is the word they most want to write.

Questions

When is a preschooler ready to trace letters?
Look for readiness rather than a birthday: a child who can copy a vertical line, a horizontal line, a circle, and a cross, and who holds a crayon with the fingers instead of a fist, is usually ready for simple letter tracing.
Should preschoolers learn capital or lowercase letters first?
Many early programs start with capitals because they are all the same height, all start at the top line, and are harder to reverse. Lowercase letters follow once capitals feel comfortable.
Are the preschool handwriting worksheets free?
Yes. The sample sheet on this page is a free PDF in US Letter or A4, no account needed. Creating and previewing your own version is free too; printing and downloading custom sheets come with Pro, which also removes the preview watermark.
