About this worksheet
Early writers learn where letters go faster when the lines have names. On this paper the top line is blue for the sky, the dashed middle line marks where short letters stop, the baseline is green for the grass every letter sits on, and the bottom line is brown for the ground that tails like g, p, and y dig into. Many classrooms call them the sky line, plane line, grass line, and worm line.
Pick four-line or three-line guides, set the line height and number of rows, and add a picture box if students should draw too. For one-color lines, the editor can instead shade the band between the midline and baseline, another common way to show where small letters go.
- 01
A color for every line
Blue sky, dashed plane, green grass, and brown ground lines make letter placement easy to explain.
- 02
Four-line or three-line
Keep the ground line for descenders or drop it for simpler three-line practice.
- 03
Highlighted option
Shade the space between the midline and baseline instead, so small letters have a clear zone.
Questions
- What do the sky, grass, and ground lines mean?
- Tall letters start at the sky line, small letters stay below the dashed middle line, every letter sits on the grass line, and letters with tails such as g, j, p, q, and y reach down to the ground line.
- Can I print it with fewer lines?
- Yes. Switch to three-line guides to drop the ground line, and set the row count and line height in the editor.
- Is there a highlighted version?
- Yes. Choose the highlight line color option to shade the band between the midline and baseline with pale yellow.
- Is the paper free to print?
- Yes. The sample sheet on this page is a free PDF in US Letter or A4, no account needed. Custom versions can be previewed for free; printing and downloading them come with Pro.
