About this worksheet

Regrouping, also called carrying, happens when a column adds to 10 or more: 47 + 38 makes 15 ones, which is 1 ten and 5 ones, so 5 is written in the ones column and the 1 carries to the tens. Every problem on this sheet carries at least once, and some carry into the hundreds.

Encourage children to write the carried 1 small at the top of the tens column. Base-ten blocks make the trade concrete: ten unit cubes really can be swapped for one rod.

Questions

What is regrouping in addition?
When the digits in a column add up to 10 or more, the ten is moved to the next column to the left. It is the same as carrying.
My child forgets to add the carried 1. Any tips?
Have them write the carried 1 above the tens column before adding that column, and say “plus the one I carried” out loud for the first few problems.
Are these two-digit addition with regrouping worksheets free?
Yes. The sample sheet on this page, with its answer key, is a free PDF in US Letter or A4, no account needed. Generating and previewing new problems is free too; printing and downloading custom sheets come with Pro, which also removes the preview watermark.
