About this worksheet
Subtracting within 20 is a first-grade fluency goal. The hardest facts are the ones that cross ten, such as 13 − 5 and 15 − 8. Two strategies help: count up from the smaller number to the larger (from 8 to 10 is 2, from 10 to 15 is 5, so 7), or use the matching addition fact.
Every answer is zero or more. Once these come easily, two-digit subtraction is the next step.

Questions
- What is the best strategy for facts like 14 − 6?
- Thinking addition is usually fastest: 6 plus what makes 14? Counting up through ten (6 to 10 is 4, then 4 more is 14, so 8) works well too.
- Are all the answers positive?
- Yes. The number subtracted is never larger than the starting number.
- Are these subtraction within 20 worksheets free?
- Yes. The sample sheet on this page, with its answer key, is a free PDF in US Letter or A4, no account needed. Generating and previewing new problems is free too; printing and downloading custom sheets come with Pro, which also removes the preview watermark.
