About this worksheet
Three-digit subtraction adds one more column and one new challenge: borrowing across a zero, as in 503 − 167, where the tens have nothing to lend and the hundreds must be traded first. The sheet mixes problems with no borrowing, one borrow, and two borrows.
Adding the answer back to the number subtracted is the quickest check, and it practices three-digit addition at the same time.

Questions
- How do you subtract across a zero?
- Trade one hundred for ten tens, then one of those tens for ten ones. In 503 − 167, the 5 hundreds become 4, the 0 tens become 9, and the 3 ones become 13.
- What grade is three-digit subtraction?
- Usually second and third grade, after two-digit subtraction with regrouping is secure.
- Are these three-digit subtraction worksheets free?
- Yes. The sample sheet on this page, with its answer key, is a free PDF in US Letter or A4, no account needed. Generating and previewing new problems is free too; printing and downloading custom sheets come with Pro, which also removes the preview watermark.
