About this worksheet
Before carrying, children need to see that a two-digit number is tens and ones, and that the ones are added to the ones and the tens to the tens. Every problem on this sheet is chosen so that no column adds up to more than 9, which keeps the focus on lining up the columns.
Start each problem in the ones column, even though it would be possible to start with the tens here. Building the right-to-left habit now makes regrouping much easier when it arrives.

Questions
- Why start with addition without regrouping?
- It isolates place value: children practice adding ones and tens separately before they have to handle a carried ten. Once that is comfortable, regrouping is a small step.
- Should children start adding from the left or right?
- From the right, in the ones column. It gives the same answer here and is the habit that regrouping depends on.
- Are these two-digit addition without regrouping worksheets free?
- Yes. The sample sheet on this page, with its answer key, is a free PDF in US Letter or A4, no account needed. Generating and previewing new problems is free too; printing and downloading custom sheets come with Pro, which also removes the preview watermark.
