About this worksheet

The first grade list is the third Dolch level, after pre-primer and primer, and it is typically used in first grade. The full first grade list is: after, again, an, any, as, ask, by, could, every, fly, from, give, going, had, has, her, him, his, how, just, know, let, live, may, of, old, once, open, over, put, round, some, stop, take, thank, them, then, think, walk, were, when. These 41 words include question words like 'how' and 'when', past-tense verbs like 'had' and 'could', and words with silent letters such as 'know' and 'walk', so writing them by hand supports spelling as well as reading.

The worksheet starts with 12 of these words; paste in others from the list above to build the next sheet. Look-alike pairs such as 'them' and 'then', or 'were' and 'where' from the pre-primer list, are worth practicing on the same sheet so students notice the difference.

Questions

How many words are on the Dolch first grade list?
There are 41 words. Together with the pre-primer, primer, second, and third grade lists, the Dolch service words add up to 220.
Why are 'know' and 'once' hard to write?
'Know' starts with a silent k, and 'once' sounds like it starts with a w. Neither can be spelled by sounding it out, so tracing and copying them helps students remember the letters.
Are the Dolch first grade worksheets free?
Yes. The sample sheet on this page is a free PDF in US Letter or A4, no account needed. Creating and previewing your own version is free too; printing and downloading custom sheets come with Pro, which also removes the preview watermark.
