About this worksheet

The second grade list is the fourth Dolch level, following pre-primer, primer, and first grade, and it is typically used in second grade. The full second grade list is: always, around, because, been, before, best, both, buy, call, cold, does, don't, fast, first, five, found, gave, goes, green, its, made, many, off, or, pull, read, right, sing, sit, sleep, tell, their, these, those, upon, us, use, very, wash, which, why, wish, work, would, write, your. These 46 words include tricky spellings such as 'because', 'would', and 'their', plus the contraction 'don't', so writing them by hand helps spelling as much as penmanship.

The worksheet starts with 12 of these words; paste in others from the list above to build the next sheet, or focus on the words students misspell most in their own writing. Second graders can usually handle a smaller letter size and a lighter trace, so adjust those settings and check the live preview before printing.

Questions

Why include words like 'their' and 'which' in handwriting practice?
These words are not spelled the way they sound, so students have to write them from memory rather than by sounding them out. Tracing and copying them several times gives that memory something to hold on to.
Should second graders still trace words?
Tracing is a quick warm-up even for confident writers, and the blank lines that follow carry most of the practice. Lower the trace opacity so the guide is faint, which nudges students toward writing each word on their own.
Are the Dolch second grade worksheets free?
Yes. The sample sheet on this page is a free PDF in US Letter or A4, no account needed. Creating and previewing your own version is free too; printing and downloading custom sheets come with Pro, which also removes the preview watermark.
