About this worksheet

The third grade list is the last Dolch sight word level and is typically used in third grade, once students have worked through the pre-primer, primer, first, and second grade words. The full third grade list is: about, better, bring, carry, clean, cut, done, draw, drink, eight, fall, far, full, got, grow, hold, hot, hurt, if, keep, kind, laugh, light, long, much, myself, never, only, own, pick, seven, shall, show, six, small, start, ten, today, together, try, warm. Its 41 words include irregular spellings like 'laugh' and 'light' and compound words like 'myself' and 'together'.

The worksheet starts with 12 of these words; paste in the rest from the list above a dozen at a time, or pull out the words students still misspell in journals and reports. If your class is learning cursive, switch to a cursive font for a sheet that practices joins on words students already know.

Questions

Why are number words like 'six' and 'eight' on the third grade list?
The Dolch lists were drawn from words that appear often in children's reading, and number words are part of that. 'Eight' has an unusual spelling, so it is worth extra tracing practice.
What should students practice after the third grade list?
Many teachers move on to the Dolch noun list or to spelling words from their reading program. Type any of those words into the editor to keep using the same trace and copy format.
Are the Dolch third grade worksheets free?
Yes. The sample sheet on this page is a free PDF in US Letter or A4, no account needed. Creating and previewing your own version is free too; printing and downloading custom sheets come with Pro, which also removes the preview watermark.
