About this worksheet

Lowercase l is an undercurve that rises into a tall, narrow loop at the top line, followed by a slant line straight back to the baseline and an undercurve exit. The loop should cross near the midline. Uppercase L starts just below the midline with an undercurve that climbs to the top line, loops, slants down, and makes a small loop at the baseline before ending with an undercurve.

The baseline exit of l joins into any letter, and double l in words like ball should show two separate loops of equal height. Uppercase L connects to the next lowercase letter in most programs.

  1. 01

    Loop letters (e, l, h, k, f, b)

Cursive l is usually taught alongside the other letters in its stroke family, so practicing them together reinforces the shared starting stroke.

  2. 02

    Join l in real words

Words like lamp, leaf, lion practice the joins into and out of l, which is what cursive is for.

  3. 03

    Traditional US cursive

Set in a traditional cursive style on three-line guides, on Letter or A4 paper. Switch fonts or guides in the editor.

Questions

How do I stop cursive l loops from getting too fat?
A narrow loop comes from a straight slant line down. Have your child aim the downstroke back along the upstroke instead of curving it outward.
Why is lowercase l a good starting letter for loops?
It is the plainest loop letter, so it isolates the loop motion. Once l is steady, the same loop starts b, h, k, and f.
Are the cursive letter L worksheets free?
Yes. The sample sheet on this page is a free PDF in US Letter or A4, no account needed. Creating and previewing your own version is free too; printing and downloading custom sheets come with Pro, which also removes the preview watermark.
