About this worksheet
Lowercase q starts with the same undercurve and downcurve oval as a, closed at the midline. Retrace down into a slant line below the baseline, then curve the lower loop to the right so it closes at the baseline, and exit with an undercurve. Uppercase Q in traditional cursive looks like a large numeral 2: it starts near the baseline, overcurves to the top line, curves down, and loops along the baseline.
Lowercase q is almost always followed by u, and its undercurve exit leads straight into the first u stroke. Programs differ on uppercase Q; some join it from the baseline loop and others leave a gap.

Downcurve letters (a, d, g, o, c, q)
Cursive q is usually taught alongside the other letters in its stroke family, so practicing them together reinforces the shared starting stroke.
- 02
Join q in real words
Words like queen, quilt, quiet practice the joins into and out of q, which is what cursive is for.

Questions
- Why does cursive Q look like the number 2?
- Traditional uppercase Q is built from an overcurve and a baseline loop, which gives it a 2-like shape. Writing it beside a 2 helps children notice the extra loop.
- How is cursive q different from g?
- The q tail closes on the right and exits with an undercurve, while the g tail loops left and exits with an overcurve. The q shape matches its partner letter u.
- Are the cursive letter Q worksheets free?
- Yes. The sample sheet on this page is a free PDF in US Letter or A4, no account needed. Creating and previewing your own version is free too; printing and downloading custom sheets come with Pro, which also removes the preview watermark.
