About this worksheet
Lowercase s starts with an undercurve that comes to a point slightly above the midline. Curve down and back to close at the baseline, touching the upstroke, and finish with an undercurve. Uppercase S usually starts at the baseline with an undercurve to the top line, makes a loop, curves down to the baseline, and swings back to close before a curve to the right.
After closing at the baseline, s leaves with an undercurve, so it joins smoothly into the next letter; st and sh are common. Uppercase S ends with a curve back toward itself in many programs and is not joined, though some styles connect it.

Undercurve letters (i, t, u, w, r, s, p, j)
Cursive s is usually taught alongside the other letters in its stroke family, so practicing them together reinforces the shared starting stroke.
- 02
Join s in real words
Words like sun, sock, star practice the joins into and out of s, which is what cursive is for.

Traditional US cursive
Set in a traditional cursive style on three-line guides, on Letter or A4 paper. Switch fonts or guides in the editor.
Questions
- Why does cursive s look like a print s?
- Children often draw the print curve. Cursive s starts on the baseline, rises to a point, and closes at the bottom.
- How do I stop cursive s from looking like a blob?
- Make the point at the top clear and keep the closing curve small. Writing a row of s shapes slowly before words builds control.
- Are the cursive letter S worksheets free?
- Yes. The sample sheet on this page is a free PDF in US Letter or A4, no account needed. Creating and previewing your own version is free too; printing and downloading custom sheets come with Pro, which also removes the preview watermark.
