About this worksheet
Lowercase z in traditional cursive starts with an overcurve to the midline and a slant line down. Then overcurve again and curve down to the baseline, continue below it, form a lower loop that closes at the baseline, and exit with an overcurve. Uppercase Z starts with a curve forward at the top line, slants down, overcurves, curves down below the baseline into a loop, and exits with an overcurve.
Lowercase z exits with an overcurve from below the baseline, so it joins the next letter much like y does. Uppercase Z joins the following lowercase letter.
- 01
Overcurve letters (n, m, x, y, z, v)
Cursive z is usually taught alongside the other letters in its stroke family, so practicing them together reinforces the shared starting stroke.
- 02
Join z in real words
Words like zoo, zebra, zero practice the joins into and out of z, which is what cursive is for.
- 03
Traditional US cursive
Set in a traditional cursive style on three-line guides, on Letter or A4 paper. Switch fonts or guides in the editor.
Questions
- Why does traditional cursive z have a tail?
- Traditional cursive z dips below the baseline into a loop. Some programs teach a simpler z without a tail.
- Why does cursive z look so different from print?
- The print zigzag is replaced by an overcurve, a curve down, and a lower loop. Practice the motion slowly in words like zoo and zip.
- Are the cursive letter Z worksheets free?
- Yes. The sample sheet on this page is a free PDF in US Letter or A4, no account needed. Creating and previewing your own version is free too; printing and downloading custom sheets come with Pro, which also removes the preview watermark.
