About this worksheet
Lowercase d starts like a: an undercurve to the midline and a downcurve around to close the oval. Instead of stopping at the midline, push the stroke up to the top line, then retrace a slant line down to the baseline and add an undercurve. Most programs keep the stem unlooped. Uppercase D usually starts at the top line with a slant down, a small loop at the baseline, and a wide curve back up and around to the top.
The undercurve exit of lowercase d joins easily into the next letter, including another d as in add. Watch that the retraced stem does not open into a loop, which makes the join look like a. Uppercase D commonly ends at the top line and does not join the letter after it.

Downcurve letters (a, d, g, o, c, q)
Cursive d is usually taught alongside the other letters in its stroke family, so practicing them together reinforces the shared starting stroke.
- 02
Join d in real words
Words like dog, duck, door practice the joins into and out of d, which is what cursive is for.

Questions
- Should the tall part of cursive d have a loop?
- Most current programs teach a retraced stem with no loop, but some older styles loop it. Pick one style and keep it consistent across the worksheet.
- Why is uppercase cursive D harder than lowercase?
- Uppercase D has a loop at the bottom and a large curve that must close neatly at the top, so it takes more control. Practice it slowly on its own before writing names that start with D.
- Are the cursive letter D worksheets free?
- Yes. The sample sheet on this page is a free PDF in US Letter or A4, no account needed. Creating and previewing your own version is free too; printing and downloading custom sheets come with Pro, which also removes the preview watermark.
