About this worksheet
Lowercase i is the simplest cursive letter: an undercurve from the baseline to the midline, a slant line straight back down, and an undercurve exit. The dot goes on after the whole word is written, not in the middle of it. Uppercase I starts near the baseline with an overcurve that rises to the top line, curves down with a slant to the baseline, and finishes with a small loop and curve to the right.
The undercurve exit of i joins every lowercase letter without a bridge. Children should keep writing through the word and come back to dot each i at the end so the pen does not lift mid-word. Uppercase I usually does not join the next letter.

Undercurve letters (i, t, u, w, r, s, p, j)
Cursive i is usually taught alongside the other letters in its stroke family, so practicing them together reinforces the shared starting stroke.
- 02
Join i in real words
Words like ice, inch, igloo practice the joins into and out of i, which is what cursive is for.

Traditional US cursive
Set in a traditional cursive style on three-line guides, on Letter or A4 paper. Switch fonts or guides in the editor.
Questions
- When should the dot on cursive i be added?
- After the whole word is finished. Stopping to dot each i interrupts the connected motion that cursive is meant to build.
- Why is lowercase i often taught first in cursive?
- It uses only the undercurve and slant line, the two strokes that most other undercurve letters are built from. It makes a good warm-up before t, u, and w.
- Are the cursive letter I worksheets free?
- Yes. The sample sheet on this page is a free PDF in US Letter or A4, no account needed. Creating and previewing your own version is free too; printing and downloading custom sheets come with Pro, which also removes the preview watermark.
