About this worksheet
Lowercase p starts with an undercurve to the midline and a slant line down below the baseline. Retrace back up the stem, curve forward and around to close at the baseline, and finish with an undercurve. Most programs use a retraced stem, though some older styles loop it. Uppercase P starts at the top line with a slant down, retraces up, and curves forward and back to close near the midline.
The undercurve exit of lowercase p comes off the baseline, so words like puppy flow without bridges even with three p stems. Uppercase P ends inside its bowl at the midline and usually does not join the next letter.

Undercurve letters (i, t, u, w, r, s, p, j)
Cursive p is usually taught alongside the other letters in its stroke family, so practicing them together reinforces the shared starting stroke.
- 02
Join p in real words
Words like pig, pen, pizza practice the joins into and out of p, which is what cursive is for.

Traditional US cursive
Set in a traditional cursive style on three-line guides, on Letter or A4 paper. Switch fonts or guides in the editor.
Questions
- Why does cursive p need a retrace?
- The retrace takes the pen back up the descender so the bowl can be drawn without lifting. Skipping it leaves a gap or an extra loop.
- Why is uppercase cursive P not connected?
- Uppercase P finishes inside its bowl at the midline, away from where the next letter starts. Most programs leave a small space after it.
- Are the cursive letter P worksheets free?
- Yes. The sample sheet on this page is a free PDF in US Letter or A4, no account needed. Creating and previewing your own version is free too; printing and downloading custom sheets come with Pro, which also removes the preview watermark.
