About this worksheet
Lowercase r begins with an undercurve that goes slightly above the midline. Make a short slant to the right to form the shoulder, then a slant line down to the baseline and an undercurve exit. Uppercase R starts at the top line with a slant down, retraces up, curves forward and back to the midline to make the bowl, then slants down to the baseline and finishes with an undercurve.
The baseline exit of r joins the next letter easily. Reaching r from b, o, v, or w is the hard join: the bridge must climb into the shoulder without becoming an extra hump. Many programs join uppercase R to the next letter; some do not.

Undercurve letters (i, t, u, w, r, s, p, j)
Cursive r is usually taught alongside the other letters in its stroke family, so practicing them together reinforces the shared starting stroke.
- 02
Join r in real words
Words like rabbit, rain, red practice the joins into and out of r, which is what cursive is for.

Traditional US cursive
Set in a traditional cursive style on three-line guides, on Letter or A4 paper. Switch fonts or guides in the editor.
Questions
- Why does cursive r look like an i?
- The shoulder is usually missing. Have your child stop just above the midline and make a short flat stroke to the right before slanting down.
- Is cursive r one of the harder lowercase letters?
- Many children find r and s tricky because the small shoulder or point is easy to skip. Practicing the shoulder slowly in pairs such as ar and or helps.
- Are the cursive letter R worksheets free?
- Yes. The sample sheet on this page is a free PDF in US Letter or A4, no account needed. Creating and previewing your own version is free too; printing and downloading custom sheets come with Pro, which also removes the preview watermark.
