About this worksheet
Lowercase y starts with an overcurve to the midline, a slant line down to the baseline, and an undercurve back up to the midline. Then slant down below the baseline, curve left to close the lower loop at the baseline, and exit with an overcurve. Uppercase Y starts with a curve forward at the top line, slants down, undercurves to the top line, then slants into a lower loop and an overcurve.
Lowercase y exits with an overcurve that rises from the baseline, so the next letter is approached from below. Words ending in y, such as happy, leave the exit as a short flick. Uppercase Y joins the following lowercase letter.
- 01
Overcurve letters (n, m, x, y, z, v)
Cursive y is usually taught alongside the other letters in its stroke family, so practicing them together reinforces the shared starting stroke.
- 02
Join y in real words
Words like yes, yellow, yarn practice the joins into and out of y, which is what cursive is for.
- 03
Traditional US cursive
Set in a traditional cursive style on three-line guides, on Letter or A4 paper. Switch fonts or guides in the editor.
Questions
- Why does cursive y look like a g?
- The first part of y is an open overcurve and slant line, not a closed oval like g. Keep the top part open.
- Why does the loop on cursive y swing out?
- The tail is often curved too far left. Have your child bring the loop back to the baseline crossing point.
- Are the cursive letter Y worksheets free?
- Yes. The sample sheet on this page is a free PDF in US Letter or A4, no account needed. Creating and previewing your own version is free too; printing and downloading custom sheets come with Pro, which also removes the preview watermark.
