About this worksheet
Lowercase cursive a begins with an undercurve up to the midline, then a downcurve back around to the baseline to make the oval. Close the oval at the midline, retrace down the right side with a slant line, and finish with an undercurve. Uppercase A starts at the top line with a downcurve to the baseline, an undercurve back up to the top line, a slant line down, and an undercurve exit.
The undercurve exit of a rises toward the midline, so it flows into most letters. Before another downcurve letter such as c, d, or o, carry the exit a little higher and curve back over into the new oval. Uppercase A usually joins the letter after it.

Downcurve letters (a, d, g, o, c, q)
Cursive a is usually taught alongside the other letters in its stroke family, so practicing them together reinforces the shared starting stroke.
- 02
Join a in real words
Words like apple, ant, animal practice the joins into and out of a, which is what cursive is for.
- 03
Traditional US cursive
Set in a traditional cursive style on three-line guides, on Letter or A4 paper. Switch fonts or guides in the editor.
Questions
- Why does my child's cursive a look like an o?
- The oval is often left open at the top, or the slant line is skipped. Remind them to close the oval at the midline and retrace down before the exit stroke.
- Should lowercase or uppercase cursive a come first?
- Most programs teach lowercase a first, alongside c, d, and o, because it shares the same downcurve start and appears far more often in words.
- Are the cursive letter A worksheets free?
- Yes. The sample sheet on this page is a free PDF in US Letter or A4, no account needed. Creating and previewing your own version is free too; printing and downloading custom sheets come with Pro, which also removes the preview watermark.
