About this worksheet
Lowercase e is a short loop letter: an undercurve rises to about the midline, curls back to the left, and slants down to cross itself before reaching the baseline. Finish with an undercurve. The loop should be open, not filled in. Uppercase E starts below the top line with a small curve, makes a downcurve to the midline, forms a tiny loop, and finishes with a second downcurve to the baseline and an undercurve.
The undercurve exit of e connects smoothly to nearly every letter. The hard part is reaching e from b, o, v, or w, which end at the midline: the bridge has to dip before looping up so the e stays open. Uppercase E joins the following lowercase letter.
- 01
Loop letters (e, l, h, k, f, b)
Cursive e is usually taught alongside the other letters in its stroke family, so practicing them together reinforces the shared starting stroke.
- 02
Join e in real words
Words like egg, eagle, elbow practice the joins into and out of e, which is what cursive is for.
- 03
Traditional US cursive
Set in a traditional cursive style on three-line guides, on Letter or A4 paper. Switch fonts or guides in the editor.
Questions
- Why does cursive e close up into a blob?
- The undercurve is usually too steep, so the loop has no room. Encourage a wider, gentler upstroke and a clear crossing point.
- How tall should cursive e be compared with l?
- Lowercase e stays at the midline, while l loops up to the top line. Practicing el and le side by side helps children feel the height difference.
- Are the cursive letter E worksheets free?
- Yes. The sample sheet on this page is a free PDF in US Letter or A4, no account needed. Creating and previewing your own version is free too; printing and downloading custom sheets come with Pro, which also removes the preview watermark.
