About this worksheet
Lowercase j begins with an undercurve to the midline, then a slant line that runs below the baseline. Curve to the left to make the lower loop, close it at the baseline, and exit with an overcurve; dot it after the word. Uppercase J starts near the baseline with an overcurve to the top line, slants down through the baseline into a lower loop, and also leaves with an overcurve.
Like g and y, j exits with an overcurve that rises from the baseline crossing, so the next letter is approached from below. Joins into a, o, or u come up naturally from that stroke. Uppercase J joins the following lowercase letter in most programs.
- 01
Undercurve letters (i, t, u, w, r, s, p, j)
Cursive j is usually taught alongside the other letters in its stroke family, so practicing them together reinforces the shared starting stroke.
- 02
Join j in real words
Words like jam, jar, jump practice the joins into and out of j, which is what cursive is for.

Questions
- Why does the loop on cursive j not close?
- The tail often swings out to the side instead of coming back up to the baseline. Have your child aim the loop back to the point where the slant line crossed the baseline.
- Is uppercase J hard to write in cursive?
- Uppercase J is taller and has a long lower loop, so spacing below the baseline matters. Practicing it on lined paper with a clear descender space helps.
- Are the cursive letter J worksheets free?
- Yes. The sample sheet on this page is a free PDF in US Letter or A4, no account needed. Creating and previewing your own version is free too; printing and downloading custom sheets come with Pro, which also removes the preview watermark.
