About this worksheet
Zero starts at the top, a little right of center. Curve up and to the left, come down around the left side to the baseline, and continue up the right side to close where you started. It is one continuous counterclockwise stroke. Most handwriting programs make zero a little narrower than the letter O, an upright oval rather than a circle, which helps children tell the two apart.
Zero is the first numeral where the stroke direction matters: starting at the bottom or going clockwise produces a shape that looks fine but slows writing down later. Watch the first few zeros on the traced row and correct the starting point early. Pair the sheet with a quick talk about “nothing” — zero apples, zero blocks — so the symbol means a quantity, not just a shape.

Trace and write 0
Rows of faded 0s to trace, each followed by a blank guide line to write the numeral from memory.
- 02
The word “zero”
The number word comes after the numeral, so the sheet links the symbol, the word, and the quantity.
- 03
Sized for early writers
Large numerals on three-line guides, on Letter or A4 paper. Change the size, font, or guides in the editor.
Questions
- Should zero be written the same as the letter O?
- Not quite. Zero is usually written as a narrower, upright oval, while O is rounder. In early grades the difference is small, but a slim zero keeps numbers like 10 and 100 compact and easy to read.
- Which way should my child go around when writing 0?
- Start at the top and go counterclockwise: up, over to the left, down, and around back to the top. It is the same movement used for the letters c, a, d, and o.
- Are the number 0 tracing worksheets free?
- Yes. The sample sheet on this page is a free PDF in US Letter or A4, no account needed. Creating and previewing your own version is free too; printing and downloading custom sheets come with Pro, which also removes the preview watermark.
