About this worksheet

Five is written in two strokes, and the hat goes on last. Start at the top line, pull a short straight line down to the midline, then curve around to the right in a big belly that ends near the baseline on the left. Lift the pencil, go back to the top of the first line, and draw the flat hat across to the right.

Children commonly reverse 5 or draw the belly facing left. The rhyme many teachers use — “down, around, put on its hat” — fits the stroke order on these traced rows. If the hat drifts away from the line, have your child start the hat exactly where the first line began.

Questions

Do you draw the top of a 5 first or last?
Last, in most school programs. Pull the short line down, make the round belly, then lift and add the flat top. Drawing the top first is not wrong, but the two-stroke order is easier to keep facing the right way.
My child writes 5 like an S. How do I help?
An S-shaped 5 usually means the first stroke is curved instead of straight. Practice the straight line down to the midline on its own, then add the belly, and the corner will appear.
Are the number 5 tracing worksheets free?
Yes. The sample sheet on this page is a free PDF in US Letter or A4, no account needed. Creating and previewing your own version is free too; printing and downloading custom sheets come with Pro, which also removes the preview watermark.
