About this worksheet
Thirteen is a 1 followed by a 3. Write the straight 1 first, then the 3 as two bumps facing right: start just below the top line, curve around to the midline, and curve around again to the baseline. The 3 sits close to the 1 and at the same height.
Thirteen is the first number where the word says the ones digit first (“thir-teen” sounds like three then ten), but the numeral is written tens first. That mismatch is why children sometimes write 31. Say “one ten and three ones” while tracing. Note the spelling too: “thir”, not “three”.

Questions
- Why does my child write 31 for thirteen?
- Teen number words name the ones digit first, so children write what they hear. Practice saying “ten and three” and writing the 1 first; the traced rows reinforce the correct order.
- Why is thirteen not spelled “threeteen”?
- The “thir” form is an older spelling of three that survives in thirteen and thirty. It is a common spelling mistake, so it is worth tracing the word.
- Are the number 13 tracing worksheets free?
- Yes. The sample sheet on this page is a free PDF in US Letter or A4, no account needed. Creating and previewing your own version is free too; printing and downloading custom sheets come with Pro, which also removes the preview watermark.
