About this worksheet

Twenty is a 2 followed by a 0. Write the 2 first: start just below the top line, curve over to the right, slant down to the bottom left, and finish with a flat line on the baseline. Then write the 0 counterclockwise from the top, as a narrow oval the same height as the 2.

Twenty is the first number where the tens digit is not 1, so it shows two full tens and no extra ones. Two ten frames or two bundles of ten sticks make the idea concrete. The word “twenty” starts the pattern of tens words (thirty, forty, fifty) that end in “ty”.

Questions

How do I explain the 0 in 20?
The 2 means two tens and the 0 means no extra ones. Showing two full ten frames with nothing left over makes this visible.
Why does twenty end in “ty” but thirteen ends in “teen”?
“Teen” numbers are ten plus a little; “ty” numbers count whole tens. Noticing the difference in sound helps children write the right number when they hear it.
Are the number 20 tracing worksheets free?
Yes. The sample sheet on this page is a free PDF in US Letter or A4, no account needed. Creating and previewing your own version is free too; printing and downloading custom sheets come with Pro, which also removes the preview watermark.
