About this worksheet

Most US school programs teach an open 4 in two strokes. Start at the top line and pull straight down to the midline, then turn and go straight across to the right. Lift the pencil, start at the top again to the right of the first line, and pull a long straight line down through the crossbar to the baseline. The closed, triangle-shaped 4 seen in printed books is harder for small hands and is usually left for later.

Four is the first numeral that needs a pencil lift, so watch that your child lifts and restarts at the top rather than tracing back up the first line. On the traced rows, check that the second line is longer and reaches the baseline. Counting four fingers or four corners of a square before tracing connects the shape to the quantity.

Rows of faded 4s to trace, each followed by a blank guide line to write the numeral from memory.

  2. 02

    The word “four”

The number word comes after the numeral, so the sheet links the symbol, the word, and the quantity.

Questions

Should my child write an open 4 or a closed 4?
The open 4 (two separate strokes with an open top) is the form most US handwriting programs teach first because it is easier to control. Either is correct; just keep it consistent with what your child sees at school.
Why does my child’s 4 look like a 9?
When the two strokes curve or the top closes up, a 4 can drift toward a 9. Emphasize straight lines and a clear corner where the first stroke turns across.
Are the number 4 tracing worksheets free?
Yes. The sample sheet on this page is a free PDF in US Letter or A4, no account needed. Creating and previewing your own version is free too; printing and downloading custom sheets come with Pro, which also removes the preview watermark.
