About this worksheet
Nine starts with a small loop in the top half. Begin just below the top line on the right, curve left and around counterclockwise to close a loop that sits above the midline. Without lifting, pull a straight line down from the right side of the loop to the baseline. The line can be straight or very slightly curved at the end, depending on the program.
Nine is often reversed or confused with 6, P, and the letters g and q. Tracing builds the “loop first, then line down” order. A helpful cue: “a balloon on a string.” Have your child check that the string hangs from the right side of the balloon.

Trace and write 9
Rows of faded 9s to trace, each followed by a blank guide line to write the numeral from memory.
- 02
The word “nine”
The number word comes after the numeral, so the sheet links the symbol, the word, and the quantity.
- 03
Sized for early writers
Large numerals on three-line guides, on Letter or A4 paper. Change the size, font, or guides in the editor.
Questions
- Why does my child write 9 backwards?
- Reversals of 9 are common because the loop can go either way and still look round. Starting the loop on the right and going counterclockwise, like the letter a, keeps it facing the right way.
- Is the line on a 9 straight or curved?
- Most school print styles use a straight line down. A curved tail is a typeface style and is fine to read, but the straight line is easier to write neatly.
- Are the number 9 tracing worksheets free?
- Yes. The sample sheet on this page is a free PDF in US Letter or A4, no account needed. Creating and previewing your own version is free too; printing and downloading custom sheets come with Pro, which also removes the preview watermark.
