About this worksheet

Eight can be written in one continuous stroke. Start at the top, just right of center, and curve left and down like the start of an S, cross through the middle, round the bottom, then come back up through the middle on the other side to close at the top. Some programs teach a simpler version: a small circle on top of a larger one, like a snowman. Both are acceptable; the single stroke is faster once learned.

Eight is the hardest single numeral for many preschoolers because the stroke crosses itself. If the one-stroke version is frustrating, start with the snowman method and move to the continuous stroke later. The word “eight” is spelled irregularly, so the last traced rows also help with an early tricky word.

    Trace and write 8

Rows of faded 8s to trace, each followed by a blank guide line to write the numeral from memory.

  2. 02

    The word “eight”

The number word comes after the numeral, so the sheet links the symbol, the word, and the quantity.

Questions

Is it OK to write 8 as two circles?
Yes, stacking two circles is a common first method and produces a readable 8. Once that is easy, the single “S and back up” stroke is quicker and is what most programs aim for.
Why is 8 so hard for my child?
The stroke crosses itself and changes direction twice. Slow tracing on these rows, saying “make an S and go back home,” breaks it into steps.
Are the number 8 tracing worksheets free?
Yes. The sample sheet on this page is a free PDF in US Letter or A4, no account needed. Creating and previewing your own version is free too; printing and downloading custom sheets come with Pro, which also removes the preview watermark.
